Diners in search of the best restaurant in Australia would do well to head to Pokolbin if TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards is anything to go by as Muse Restaurant, in the Hunter Valley, offers the top foodie experience to gourmands.

According to travellers, the restaurant, which delivers modern Australian dishes with a locally-sourced, seasonal focus, offers "a stunning dining experience" and "the best dessert ever".

While Melbourne may be hailed the gourmet capital of Australia, the foodie state didn't make it onto TripAdvisor's top ten list for its top eateries, which include Maha, Coda and Vue de Monde.

In second place came est. in Sydney, with its "delicious and inventive food and an extensive wine list," while Pokolbin was named again as it took the third spot for its Restaurant Botanica, which offers "brilliant food and service in the vines".

Restaurants in Canberra, Queensland and Perth also featured in TripAdvisor's top ten, with Asian food, seafood and contemporary Australian cuisine proving popular.
