Bizarre snake-like creature spotted in underwater expedition


Recently the crew aboard NOAA's Okeanos Explorer came across a particularly impressive siphonophore.

Although the creature seems to be travelling alone that's far from the case.

What appears to be a single entity is actually a collection of many, many smaller organisms, each providing a specialised skill that furthers the community as a whole.

This one is notable as it is impressively intact, something not often seen among such colonies.

While you might want to take a closer look if you see one, the team advises against it as siphonophores can pack a very painful sting.

This one was seen during an expedition in the remote Pacific.
