New research suggests potential links between chronic sinus issues and depression

According to CBS Pittsburgh, sinusitis affects more than 12 per cent of adults in the United States. And that's just the people who have been properly diagnosed.

The study of more than 100 people involved a questionnaire about the symptoms the participants deal with.

The primary issues include problems breathing through your nose, pain, postnasal drainage and decreased sense of taste and smell.

But when they talked about the days they missed work or school, their reasons were most commonly tied to symptoms of depression.

Dr. James DeAngelo of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Associates tells CBS Pittsburgh it's a little too early to make any conclusions.

But this research may help ENTs or other physicians watch out for signs of patients who may need care that extends far beyond a stuffy nose.
