Charles to honour First World War dead during Italy visit

The Prince of Wales will honour First World War dead during the first full day of his visit to Italy while the Duchess of Cornwall visits a project supporting vulnerable people, based in a former mafia villa.

The royal couple are on a tour of Europe that has been widely interpreted as a Brexit diplomacy visit, with the heir to the throne strengthening ties with the continent as the UK begins the process of leaving the EU.

Charles will travel to north-east Italy to mark the centenary of the deployment of British forces to the Austrian front in 1917, and pay his respects to those from all countries who died in the conflict.

The heir to the throne will tour a Commonwealth War Graves site to pay his respects and also visit the Italian front.

Camilla will visit Naples for a series of engagements, including a trip to La Gloriette, a project supporting vulnerable people to help them integrate back into their communities, which is based in a villa confiscated from the mafia.

The Duchess will also visit the ancient Roman site of Herculaneum, where she will hear how international expertise is supporting the excavations.

Later in Florence, the couple will attend an event to showcase some of the best "slow food" from the Amatrice region and meet farmers and food producers affected by an earthquake that struck the region last year.
