A recent incident in Indiana is a reminder that when it comes to wild animals, it's not just deer you should watch out for on the road.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office used Facebook to warn locals about the perils of wild animals on the road.

They explained that a family had been on the road when a freak incident occurred, saying: "As they traveled west on US 20 in La Porte County a wild turkey flew into the path of their rental vehicle.

"The wild turkey was impaled in the center of the windshield."

While the bird was killed instantly the family luckily only suffered minor cuts.

They added: "Mating season for wild turkeys means that they are often on the move and can be as hazardous as deer."
