The property, in Broadstairs, Kent, was built in 1801 and was Charles Dickens' summer home. It is where he wrote his novel David Copperfield in 1851.

Owner Richard Hilton, who bought the house as a family home, told the Daily Mirror: "I thought it was my destiny. I'd never read Charles Dickens but once I saw it, and the state of it, I saw what could be done with it."

He added: "I have never regretted buying it, ever. But it is now time to move on. I have been very ill."

Kent Online reports that the house features a museum, its own prison cells and an underground inn.

The house is currently operating as a bed and breakfast and a wedding venue.
