Reykjavik switches street lights off for Northern Lights display



Streetlights across much of Iceland's capital were switched off on Wednesday night so that its citizens could make the most of the otherworldly glow of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) dancing in the sky above them.

The whole of Reykjavik went dark for the evening because high-solar particle activity, combined with clear skies, created unusually perfect conditions to witness the beautiful light show.

The phenomenon is produced when charged particles interact with the earth's atmosphere.
