There are actually quite a few countries that disappeared in the 20th century – and many of these are countries that disappeared because of war.

Germany used to be called Prussia, East Germany and the Weimar Republic, Sri Lanka was once Ceylon, Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and the Ottoman Empire was basically replaced by the Republic of Turkey.
