Bombs used to trigger avalanche in Colorado


Avalanche control teams dropped bombs from a helicopter onto Ajax Peak in Telluride, Colorado, on Thursday, 26 January, to trigger an avalanche.

The avalanche can be seen about 30 seconds into the video above.

A crowd gathered on East Colorado Avenue to witness the avalanche.

The video was posted to the Visit Telluride Facebook page along with the comment: "It is not every day you get to see an avalanche off Ajax, one of Telluride's iconic peaks."

Controlled avalanches are used to make the piste safer for skiers and snowboarders and aim to prevent natural avalanches happening.
