An affordable hotel in Llandudno has beaten the globe's most luxurious places to stay to be named the best hotel in the world for service.

Wales' Lawton Court Hotel, where the rooms cost as little as £78 per night, claimed the world number one spot in the Best Service category of TripAdvisor's 2017 Travellers' Choice awards.

Guests praised the "amazing hotel" for its "perfect location" and "wonderful owners". Many spoke of returning to the hotel again and said it was "one of the friendliest places we have stayed at".

Open since 2014, the Lawton Court Hotel is run by a local couple, Scott and Hannah Lawton-Jones.

The pair said: "Since opening the doors to Lawton Court in April 2014, to say things have been busy is an understatement! We are so grateful and lucky to have welcomed so many lovely guests to stay over the last three years and not forgetting the fantastic hardworking team we have that share the same principles as us...we are here to help and that's what we love to do! We're very much looking forward to the future."

In another win for the UK seaside town, Llandudno's The Elm Tree Hotel, situated less than 500 feet from Lawton Court, scooped the prize for the world's best-rated Bargain Hotel.

Meanwhile, Dorset's Bindon Bottom B&B in Lulworth Cove was named the best bed and breakfast in the world.

And when it comes to something extra opulent, the UK winner of the Top Hotels category was London's Hotel 41, located opposite Buckingham Palace, which also celebrated placing seventh in Europe and 20th in the world.

Just some of its luxurious features include Savoir beds, a personal butler service and staff who outnumber guests two to one. If you fancy a stay, rooms are bookable on TripAdvisor for an average of £436 per night.

The number one hotel in the world was named Hungary's music-themed Aria Hotel Budapest. The luxury boutique hotel's four wings are dedicated to a different genre of music: classical, opera, contemporary and jazz.

Hayley Coleman at TripAdvisor said: "Unlike other hospitality awards, these are based on feedback from actual guests over the past year, which is what makes them so prized within the industry."
