Labour seeks assurances over National Lottery after cyber attack

Labour has demanded "absolute assurances" the National Lottery is safe after cyber criminals hacked into the online accounts of thousands of players.

Operator Camelot last month disclosed it believed "around 26,500 players' accounts were accessed", adding "fewer than 50" had activity take place after the hack.

Tom Watson asked Culture Secretary Karen Bradley if she has "confidence in the operational security" of the game.

The shadow culture secretary added: "Can you give the House your absolute assurance that Britain's National Lottery is safe and will you commit to come back to the despatch box if there are any further revelations of security breaches at Camelot?"

Ms Bradley replied: "I've met Camelot, I'm working with Camelot to make sure they are secure as they possibly can be and that they take all cyber security measures that they can."

Camelot says it has around 9.5 million registered online players.
