Matt Terry lifts X Factor crown

Waiter Matt Terry has been crowned the winner of the X Factor 2016.

The 23-year-old beat Sharon Osbourne's finalist, Finnish singer Saara Aalto, to clinch the title at a star-studded show held at Wembley Arena.

Matt picked Sam Smith's Bond theme tune, Writing's On The Wall, as his favourite song of the show.

His final song was a rendition of Randy Crawford's 1980 hit One Day I'll Fly Away.

Host Dermot O'Leary said there had been a total of 6.4 million votes cast and revealed Ed Sheeran has written this year's winner's single, When Christmas Comes Around.

A tearful Matt, from Bromley, said: "Thank you so much."

This is the second win for his mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, who mentored James Arthur, the winner of the 2012 series.

During Saturday night's semi-final show, Matt sang Jess Glynne's Take Me Home and teamed up with Nicole for a rendition of the Prince hit Purple Rain.

Ahead of the Sunday finale, Matt tweeted his thanks to his fans writing: "Feeling blessed and grateful for all of you right now. Let's do this together. Thank you for being here with me every step of the way."

During his first X Factor audition he sang Ben E King's Stand By Me and was told by head judge Simon Cowell that he reminded him of Olly Murs, who was the show's runner-up in 2009.
