Arguably Britain's most famous unemployed pensioner is going back to work.

His first interview in 20 years was a success and Joe Bartley has a profession again.

He said: "I thought I'd be really nervous but I'm taking it all in and I'm OK about it.

"I'm quite happy in a way. The way you feel when you've won a thousand bucks on the horses or something like that!"

Having done the face-to-face interview the former soldier was given a warm welcome and shown the ropes by his new colleagues.

Kate Allen, who owns the Cantina Kitchen & Bar, said: "He's so keen, I mean, how often do you get an 89-year-old person approaching you and saying 'I want to work'?

"Usually we have to go out and find people and then when we get them, sometimes they don't even want to work.

"But he's keen and we just couldn't say no."

Joe had put an advert in a local paper looking for work. It stated: "Work wanted. Senior citizen, 89, seeks employment in Paignton area. 20hr+ per week. Still able to clean, light gardening, DIY and anything. I have references. Old soldier, airborne forces. Save me from dying of boredom!"

Since the ad was released the widower has been overwhelmed by support from around the world and as he learnt the ropes on his first day, the customers were on his side too.

One lady remarked: "I admire him very much and I wish I had the courage to do the same really"

While another man said: "I think it's great. He's a real character and he'll be good for the place."

Joe wanted to pay his own way and not rely on benefits and thanks to being unafraid to ask for help, it came in ways he couldn't imagine.

Now the 89-year-old is looking forward to his new career!
