Showkoth Choudhoury, 42, was inspired after seeing some of his dishes shipped out the Democratic Republic of Congo via helicopter earlier this month.

He was responding to an unusual request from businessman Mohammed Kabir who runs football project in central Africa.

Mr Kabir enjoyed eating at Mr Choudhoury's restaurant Monsoon, in South Shields near Newcastle, he challenged him to send a takeaway to 70 UN troops based in the DRC.

Mr Choudhoury told the Newcastle Chronicle: "After watching the helicopter take off with my curries on board my thirteen-year-old son said when are you going to do it on a plane? At first I was like 'what do you mean?

'"But then I started thinking about whether it was possible

"Then I realised I knew someone who owned a plane - a Boeing 737 - which is no longer used - so ran the idea of transforming it into a dining experience and he thought it was a great idea.

"After seeing other restaurants offering different dining experiences such as the Passage to India Curry Train, I wanted to create something for Monsoon and I can't wait to welcome our first guests."

Customers will be able to enjoy a two course meal which includes a starter, a main course, rice and a vegetable side dish.

During the two-hour meal there will be the opportunity for diners to have a look at the cockpit.

Mr Choudhoury has organised an experience on December 6 which has now sold out but hopes to run more events in the future.
