All they want for Christmas ... is a chart hit, say X Factor contestants

The remaining X Factor contestants have said making it into the official music charts would be the ideal Christmas gift this year.

Matt Terry, the last singer left in the competition's male category, said: "I think we'd all like to be in the charts for Christmas.

"But whatever happens, I definitely want to get into writing next year, Emily (Middlemas) does too."

Male group 5 After Midnight went a step further by saying a number one would be their dream gift, while Saara Aalto said she just wanted to "see her dogs", which she plans to bring with her when she officially moves to the UK from Finland next year.

The singers shared their Christmas wishes on the red carpet of ITV's Gala in central London on Thursday, an event inviting the channel's biggest stars to come together to celebrate another year of hit programming.

Revealing what they planned to ask Santa for this year, number one wishes ranged from slippers to just a great big party.

Lorraine Kelly, who walked the red carpet in an elegant sparkling black gown from her own collection for JD Williams, said: "I'm a terrible person to buy for because I don't like jewellery and I'm not into designer stuff, but sweeties and candles would be good."

Actor Michelle Keegan said: "I have asked for a kettle. It's not very glamorous but the water in London is so hard and I always get limescale in my brews, so I need one of those ones with a filter."

Singer Sir Tom Jones said he just wanted "to have a nice time", while This Morning host Phillip Schofield said he didn't want anything except to have his family together with "a really good bottle of wine".

Loose Women regular Andrea McLean hoped to find a new pair of slippers under the tree and TV fashion consultant Gok Wan added: "I'm hoping for 12 hours' sleep. Just 12."

Modelling a chic black scarf he created himself from an old dress just hours previously, Gok, 42, offered an exclusive word of style advice to his fans.

He said: "This season it's all about embellishment, embroidery, sparkles - you can't have too much.

"Unless you look like a Christmas tree, you shouldn't be going out.

"I'm the worst stylist for this time of year really, because I am all about the bling. Loads of bling."
