A mother threw her newborn baby in an airport bin because she did not want to miss her connecting flight, authorities have said.

Cleaners found the infant crying and wrapped in a plastic bag in a toilet garbage can at Vienna's Schwechat International Airport in Austria.

Half an hour later, at 2am, authorities found the 27-year-old mother sleeping the airport's waiting area, covered in blood.

The woman, a Nigerian student, claimed the baby had been born stillborn, although reports said the infant died in hospital.

Officials have ordered a post-mortem to establish the cause of the child's death.

Local media reported that the woman was flying from Minsk, the capital of Belarus, to Washington D.C. and said she threw the baby away in order not to miss her connecting flight.

Prosecutor Friedrich Koehl said she would be investigated on possible charges of "suspicion of killing a child at birth".

According to Article 79 of the Austrian Criminal Code, the offence can lead to a prison sentence ranging from six months up to five years.
