Poppies on 2016 Remembrance Day coin honour Royal Mint heroes

A vibrant wreath of red poppies inspired by the memorial to the fallen workers at the Royal Mint adorns its official 2016 Remembrance Day coin.

The design on the £5 piece takes its cue from a real wreath of flowers laid at the commemorative site at the Mint's home in Llantrisant, south Wales.

It also features an inscription reading "Their name liveth for evermore", which is commonly used on war memorials.

Designer Thomas Docherty said: "This wreath is not only personal to us at the Royal Mint but also reflects the 'everyman' we all commemorate on Remembrance Day; from the wreath-layers to the poppy wearers all over the country.

"I wanted to paint the colours of the poppies boldly and vibrantly, hopefully emphasising that the poppy is a symbol of remembrance, but also one of hope for the future."

The memorial to coinage workers who fell in conflicts since the First World War is made from bricks taken from its former home on Tower Hill in London.

The coin is available in a nickel alloy version priced at £17, plus two silver versions with RRPs of £80 and £160 respectively.
