A baby western lowland gorilla was born in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The baby weighs about four pounds and is the sixth offspring for mother Kokomo.

According to local media who quoted zoo officials, Kokomo is very protective and attentive.

Visitors might have difficulties seeing the baby in the arms of her 229 pound mother.

San Diego Zoo lead keeper Peggy Sexton says: "The babies are only between three and a half or four and a half pounds, so they're really tiny and the moms hold them very close to their chest, so often what you'll see is their little face and maybe a foot or a hand sticking out."

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
