Driver who broke down at service station fined for overstaying

A motorist whose car broke down at a motorway service station was shocked to receive a £100 fine for having stayed there too long, along with a photo showing his vehicle being recovered.

James Cook, 22, was en route to Scotland on September 21 with his girlfriend when smoke began pouring from beneath the bonnet of his Suzuki Swift.
After pulling into Knutsford Services on the M6 in Cheshire and calling a recovery company, Cook was forced to wait nearly three hours until they arrived.

However, the service station, as with many others, charges motorists who remain there for longer than two hours, and three days later, Cook received a £100 penalty notification, reduced to £60 if he paid within two weeks.

Accompanying the letter were photographs showing his car entering the service station, and later being towed away behind an RAC van.

On receiving the fine, Cook, from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire was shocked.

"The first thing I saw was the pictures. I thought, "is someone is having a laugh here?" he commented.

"I couldn't believe it. I appealed it straight away. They asked me to send them the evidence, so I just wrote to them and said 'you have sent me the evidence, you jokers'.

"Two days later they wrote back to say they were cancelling the fine."

The email response from the parking firm which issued the ticket, CP Plus, read: "In light of your claims, the representations stated in your appeal have been noted and upheld.

"We apologise sincerely for any inconvenience and can confirm that this notice has been cancelled in full. No further action will take place on this occasion."
