An in depth look at the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Alfa Romeo is to reveal its hotly awaited Stelvio SUV at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

Despite the manufacturer having kept the car under tight wraps, spy photographs have given a glimpse into the likely spec of the model.

The Italian carmaker plans to introduce the Stelvio, its first SUV, to compete in what is one of the fastest-growing global markets.

Sharing parts with upcoming Fiat and Jeep models, it will sit at the upper end of the market, competing with the likes of BMW's X3, the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

How will it do so? Well, the Stelvio looks to feature the same range of petrol and diesel engines as seen in the Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon, with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol 'Stelvio Quadrifoglio' sitting atop the range.

It will be available in both a two- or four-wheel guise, with the potential for a plug-in model to come later on.

Suggestions are that the model will avoid going for an all-out practicality aspect, instead focusing on style and performance. The higher-powered versions will sit on a par with the Porsche Macan Turbo and Audi's RS Q3 Performance.

Meanwhile, spy photos suggest that the dash layout and infotainment/satnav equipment will be similar to that of the Giulia.

The model is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2017, with UK sales following later in the year. A suggested price tag of £40,000 reinforces the Stelvio's position in the more expensive end of the market.
