In a video sent to the Star Advertiser, the fireman and hiker are seen being lifted to safety by a helicopter when the basket carrying the pair gets caught on a utility pole line and the officer falls out.

The chopper then pulls the hiker, still in the basket, away to safety.

KHON2 reports that the fireman plunged 30ft to the ground, leaving him with broken bones, cracked ribs and internal injuries. He also felt a jolt of electricity.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

In June, a firefighter died following a training accident in Honolulu.

Clifford Rigsby, 63, and another firefighter were training on jet skis in rough water when he was found unconscious in the sea, Hawaii News Now reported.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died.
