A fisherman was left traumatised after seeing his friend attacked and killed by a shark in Mozambique.

Jose Muendane was fishing with his friend, known only as Julio, off the city of Maxixe in the province of Inhambane, when the fatal attack occurred.

He saw Julio attacked about 16ft away from him in the surf. His friend was bitten in the abdomen and legs and died following the incident, reports Grindtv.

It's the second fatal shark attack in a month off the coast of southern Mozambique.

News24 reports that shark attacks are not frequently reported in the area of Inhambane, but fisherman killed nine sharks in the Coconut Bay area last November as they hunted for a shark that had attacked three people.

It is believed that bull sharks, tiger sharks and hammerhead sharks were among those killed.

Inhambane province is known for its stunning beaches and coastline. It also attracts tourists as the area boasts one of the last remaining populations of dugong in Mozambique.
