First batch of Glastonbury Festival tickets for next year sell out in 23 minutes

Glastonbury Festival's first batch of tickets for next year's music extravaganza has sold out in just 23 minutes.

The ticket plus coach package opened for sale at 6pm this evening, giving music fans their first opportunity to bag a pass to 2017's festival, but online traffic was so heavy that minutes later, would-be buyers were unable to access the site.

Punters were snapping up tickets at a cost of £238 per person plus a £5 booking fee, plus coach tickets that varied in price from a £21 single from Bath to a £107 return from Glasgow.

This year there are no telephone ticket sales available, with all customers being directed to glastonbury.seetickets.com which crashed minutes after going live due to demand.

Festival organisers tweeted at 6.23pm: "The Glastonbury2017 coach and ticket packages on sale this evening have now all been sold. Thank you to everyone who bought one."

General tickets will be released at 9am on Sunday October 9.

Organisers have confirmed the event will take its traditional year off following next summer's festival - dispelling rumours that there were plans to hold the music extravaganza in another location.

Festival founder Michael Eavis previously said he "didn't really want to have a year without a festival", and claimed the event could be held somewhere else in 2017 or 2018.

But a statement on Glastonbury Festival's website said: "We can also confirm that we will be taking our next fallow year in 2018, in order to give the farm, the village and the festival team the traditional year off.

"There are no plans to hold an event at another location in 2018."

The festival last took a break in 2012.

Last year's initial release of 120,000 tickets were snapped up in just over half an hour. Those lucky enough to get tickets were treated back in June to performances by Adele, Coldplay, Muse and LCD Soundsystem.

Next year's festival will take place from June 21 to 25.
