Bentley reveals diesel Bentayga
Bentley has revealed details of the first diesel model to ever feature in the manufacturer's line-up.
The new Bentayga diesel features an all-new triple-charged, 4.0-litre V8 engine. It makes 429bhp and 664lb ft of torque, with a top speed of 168mph, and accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.
Two turbochargers are variable-geometry, sequential twin-scroll items powered by the exhaust gases, while a third electric supercharger spools up 'within 30 microseconds to eliminate turbo lag'.
Bentley says its engineers wanted to ensure that the driving experience was as its buyers have come to expect from the brand, so peak torque comes in at just 1,000rpm to help deliver 'effortless' performance.
The new engine also provides the lowest CO2 emissions of any Bentley, putting out 210g/km. As for fuel economy, the large SUV is rated at 35.8mpg on the combined cycle, which gives the 85-litre tank a range of more than 600 miles.
A number of subtle exterior styling touches differentiate the diesel from its petrol counterparts. A 'V8 Diesel' badge sits on the lower front door edge, while a new 'twin-quad' exhaust design is visible from the rear.
The interior is mostly the same as it is in the petrol version, but a new Liquid Amber finish has been introduced exclusively for the diesel. Buyers can still opt for the ludicrously expensive Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling dashboard-mounted clock – this option nearly doubles the price of the car – which is machined in solid gold and decorated with eight diamond indexes.
The new Bentley Bentayga Diesel costs from £135,800, which is approximately £30,000 less than the entry-level W12 petrol. European deliveries are slated to begin early next year.
