An Italian tourist has been trampled to death by an elephant as he tried to take a photo of the animal in Kenya.

Fernando Mocclola, 66, was reportedly having breakfast with his wife in his tent at the Swara Camp in the Tsavo National Park when he saw that an elephant had approached a nearby watering hole near the Sabaki River.

He went to take photographs of the scene, but one of the elephants charged, reports ABC News.

Malindi Police boss Muchangi Mutava said the elephant may have felt threatened.

According to Standard Media, he said: "He may have moved closer to them provoking the one that charged at him after it felt it was under a threat."

The Toronto Sun reports that the man died at the camp as officials were making efforts to get him airlifted to hospital.

The couple had been in Kenya for a month.
