A beautiful photograph showing a pair of tawny frogmouths resting in a tree displays nature's camouflage at its best.

The birds, which were pictured in Australia before their photo was shared on Reddit, are seen perfectly blending into their surroundings as they appear to take a nap high in a tree.

According to Australian Reptile Park, their silvery-grey plumage streaked with black and brown and mottled with flecks of rusty brown and white provides the birds with the ability to sit in full view on an old tree stump in broad daylight and be practically invisible.

A pair will often sit together, their heads pointing skywards to further emphasize the dead tree appearance. It is only if they are approached closely that their cover will be broken as they take to flight or try to warn off predators by opening their cavernous bright yellow mouths.

Frogmouths are found over the entire Australian mainland and Tasmania. They prefer open woodland and savannah, and prey on frogs, lizards, insects and even small mammals.

Despite their appearance, they are not owls and their night-time activity and diet are about the only thing they have in common.
