William and Kate go west to tour the Isles of Scilly

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend today touring the Isles of Scilly as their visit to the west country continues.

William and Kate will tour the three islands of St Mary's, Tresco and St Martin's to learn more about their industries, particularly the flower trade, and hear from local people about Scillonian life and culture.

The Isles of Scilly are part of the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate of land, property and investments established in 1337, that fund the public, charitable and private activities of the Prince of Wales and his family.

Charles' private income from his Duchy of Cornwall estate, which William will one day inherit, rose by 3% to £20.5 million during the last financial year.

Highlights of the visit will see the royal couple tour the main island of St Mary's and meet rowers on Porthmellon beach before they learn about a quay extension and experience a food festival and meet local producers.

On Tresco the Cambridges will be given a guided tour of Tresco Abbey Garden a popular tourist attraction and meet its gardeners. The islands are known for Scilly Flowers, a postal flower service which operates from St Martin's and the royal couple will meet members of the family run business.

Before leaving for the mainland William and Kate will travel to St Martin's Community Centre to see the services provided for residents and visitors from sports facilities to a reading room.
