Myanmar earthquake devastates ancient temples

A powerful earthquake shook central Myanmar on Wednesday, killing at least three people including two children.

In the ancient city of Bagan, scores of Buddhist pagodas have been damaged.

Truckloads of police and soldiers have been sent to the area to protect and rebuild what they can.

The 6.8 magnitude quake shook buildings across the Southeast Asia nation.

The impact on local residents seems to be limited. The tremor was felt in Thailand, India and Bangladesh.

Myanmar, which was named the world's best tourist destination in 2014, is in a seismically active part of the world, where the Indo-Australian Plate runs up against the Eurasian Plate.

A magnitude 6.9 tremor hit the country in April but caused no major loss of life.
