A man had an unfortunate face slap from a flying fish - and, thankfully for us, it was all caught on camera.

We first spotted the video at the BBC, who reported that the incident occurred near the small river side city of Havana, near Chicago.

The river is well known for its flying fish but, despite that, the man is still taken aback when the creature comes flying through the air and slaps him.

The fish are reportedly known as Asian carp, and are more abundant in Havana than any other place on Earth.

According to WGNTV, Kevin Irons, Asian carp programme director for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, explained: "We're 200 miles from Lake Michigan and about 120 miles up from the Mississippi. You find more carp per acre, per mile of river than nearly anyplace else in the world."

Matt O'Hara, Asian carp project leader for Illinois DNR, said flying fish have "greatly curbed recreational boating on the Illinois River" and that fewer people dare to waterski there any more.

He added: "People have been hit and seriously injured. I know there's been some cases of broken noses and jaws."

The department is working to try and curb the population growth and stop them from spreading "up the Mississippi or Ohio Rivers as well".
