Foodie breaks are big this year: In fact, when it comes to choosing a holiday destination, Brits rate food as even more important than cultural experiences, outdoor activities or places recommended by a friend, according to recent research from Expedia.

The good news is that you don't have to fly to Italy or Thailand for a gourmet break. Yes, Britain is the perfect place for a foodie escape, where you can combine our wonderful scenery with the excellent culinary scene that stretches from Devon to the West Highlands.

After the poll by Expedia found that a third of holidaymakers return to the same holiday destination just for the food, we wanted to explore the UK's top foodie locations for you to experience foodie hiking trails, unusual cookery schools and amazing days out with food as the theme.

Almost half of Brits book their accommodation based on how good the food is nearby but when you're staying at a hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant there's no need to venture far and we think you'll like one celebrity chef's rural bolthole, which happened to be named Britain's best hotel for 2016 too.

Further research revealed that Cornwall is one of the top up-and-coming food destinations in the world, beaten only by Puglia and Madrid.

Britain offers a wealth of culinary delights for foodies, whether you're a meat lover, cake addict or can't get enough of fresh seafood. A gourmet break doesn't have to be all about food either, as cycling, fishing and hiking are excellent ways to work up an appetite during your getaway.
