Iconic Peugeot 205 T16 is the ultimate '80s rally car for the road

With the classic car market boom showing no signs of abating, once-ordinary cars are suddenly becoming highly sought after. The Peugeot 205 GTI is one such vehicle.

Car enthusiasts have long claimed it's one of the best hot hatches money can buy, but it's still considered a bit of an everyday hero despite top-condition GTIs now fetching more than £30k. If you really want to go wild in a 205, you need to look to the T16.
Like so many of the greatest cars ever made, the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, to give it its full name, was built for motorsport homologation. The French manufacturer needed a car to compete in the legendary Group B era of the World Rally Championship, so it needed to build at least 200 road-going versions of its competition car to be eligible.

The T16 shares little in common with the standard 205, which is immediately apparent just by looking at the thing. It has imposing wide wheel arches to accommodate a wider track and huge vents behind the door to provide cooling to the engine.

Behind the door, I hear you ask? The engine was where the back seats would be in a normal 205 making this a mid-engined hatchback. Behind the driver's head sat a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produced 197bhp.

It was fitted transversely and fed power to all four wheels. An epicyclic centre differential and viscous coupling system was used and allowed the driver to adjust torque delivery bias from front to rear.

This T16 was originally an Italian press car and was imported to the UK in 2015. It's up for sale at the Mark Donaldson dealership in Hampshire for £175,000.
