UK weather: Temperatures to plunge by 10C next week

After highs of 26C delighted Britons this weekend, the UK is set to see temperatures plunge by 10C in by the middle of the week.

The plume of air from the Arctic will mean parts of Britain see temperatures as low as 13C, while 50mph winds and rough sea conditions could affect parts of the country, the Daily Mirror reports.

Cool conditions will sweep in by Wednesday, bringing colder nights and single figure temperatures.

Scotland is expected to be the worst hit, where 60mph gusts are forecast and severe weather warnings are in place.

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts told the Daily Mail: "There will be a noticeable drop in temperature from Monday following a humid night.

"This is due to a change in wind direction to a north westerly wind".

Channel 4 weatherman Liam Dutton added that rural areas in the North could even wake up to frost.

The weather is expected to improve by next weekend when a heatwave could return for the rest of the month.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Tom Crocker from the Met Office said: "There is pretty high confidence of a warmer spell and indications of warmer temperatures from the end of next week through into September.

"The mid to high 20s is quite achievable and potentially even warmer, with certainly a chance of temperatures similar to the highs in the 30s we saw in mid-July."
