British tourists drive along canal in car-free Venice, blame Google Maps

Two British tourists have blamed Google Maps after they drove their hire car along the famous Grand Canal in car-free Venice and angered locals.

The couple even almost ran over a pedestrian in the blue Fiat Panda.

According to The Local, angry residents then stopped the pair before the Brits blamed their sat-nav.

"We're just trying to reach our hotel which should be two kilometres from here," one of the tourists said. "Google Maps sent us this way."

According to the Daily Telegraph, they were trying to reach luxury hotel The Gritti Palace.

Cars are forbidden from entering Venice, with signs in English and Italian prohibiting automobiles from entering the historic city.

In June, two English holidaymakers were stopped and fined for taking their Mercedes for a spin in the Italian beauty spot.
