West Midlands Police said the man was in a critical but stable condition.

The Birmingham Mail reports that security staff at the shopping centre called an ambulance immediately, before three off-duty doctors rushed to his aid.

Shopper Jamie Taylor, 35, told the Daily Mail: "I just heard screaming and looked round and everyone was looking down at the floor outside Debenhams.

"I asked a woman what the hell had just happened and she said a bloke in his 30s walked over to the balcony, looked side to side and just vaulted over the top.

"It was horrific. There were loads of people who saw what happened. If he survived it would be a miracle, it was just so shocking."

Shoppers took to social media following the incident.

Paul Bodman wrote on Twitter: "Sad news from the Bullring. You never know what goes on in someone's mind and how fragile some people can be."
