Person trapped after car plunges into River Clyde in Renfrew

A person is trapped in a vehicle that entered the River Clyde at Renfrew.

The incident happened near Lapwing Road at about 1.20pm.

Divers have been deployed at the scene, which is close to Intu Braehead shopping centre.

A coastguard spokesman said: "We received reports of a vehicle in the water with a person trapped.

"We have two rescue teams at the scene - Helensburgh and Greenock as well as as a coastguard senior officer and the HM coastguard helicopter from Glasgow as well as police, ambulance and fire.

"The helicopter was on scene and did a quick search and went and picked up divers. There's now divers at the scene trying to rescue the person that's trapped."

A small crowd of people have gathered near the scene, a residential area close to the shopping centre.

The car, which is understood to have one person in it, was seen driving "at speed" and clipping another two cars before breaching the metal fence and entering the water.

A coastguard helicopter was at the scene but was not in the air.

One resident who asked not to be named said: "I heard a loud noise and minutes later there were police everywhere then the helicopter arrived.

"I heard that it was a woman driving alone."

The police and fire services are also on the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ''An operation is currently under way after emergency services received a report of a vehicle entering the River Clyde in Renfrew at around 13.20 on Thursday.''
