Star Wars: Cast reveal new Rogue One footage and big teasers

Thousands of fans at the Star Wars Celebration in London were treated to new behind-the-scenes footage of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, providing glimpses of Stormtroopers, Rebel fighters and plenty of explosions.

Echoing a familiar line, Felicity Jones's character Jyn Erso is shown saying: "May the Force be with us."

Rogue One is the first standalone movie in the Star Wars anthology. Set in the Star Wars universe, it slots into the timeline before A New Hope and follows a group of rebel spies and their mission to steal the plans for the evil Galactic Empire's new weapon, the Death Star.

Though most of the characters from the original franchise are not in Rogue One, this did not stop one famous Star Wars actor making a visit to the set.

Director Gareth Edwards said: "On one occasion, we were filming, I was with Felicity and we were in the middle of a shot and someone just nudged me and pointed at this guy in the corner and said, do you want to meet Luke Skywalker? And I looked over and there was Mark Hamill."

Mark played Luke Skywalker in Episodes IV, V and VI, and has also reprised the role for 2015´s Episode VII - The Force Awakens and the forthcoming Episode VIII.

Gareth, who directed 2014 blockbuster Godzilla, said: "I went over to him, and he was wearing a Godzilla T-shirt, which is the film I had made before, and I was like - do you know when you go up to someone and you are so much in awe of them?

"I don't know what I said to him, I was trying to be articulate and intelligent, and I don't know what came out, and he was being really sweet and complimentary.

"And all I was thinking as he was talking to me, I was just looking in my peripheral vision going 'Please Lord, someone be taking a photograph of this.' No one is going to believe I met Luke Skywalker."

The Rogue One panel featured the film's stars including Felicity, Diego Luna (Captain Cassian Andor), Riz Ahmed (Bodhi Rook), Mads Mikkelsen (Jyn's father Galen), Alan Tudyk (K-2SO) and Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera).

Felicity said there was an element of Harrison Ford's Star Wars character in Jyn.

She explained: "She's got a pretty cool Han Solo gun belt, inspired by Han Solo."

The actress, 32, said there was a big difference between her character and other heroes of the Star Wars universe, including Rey and Luke.

She explained: "The main difference would be that Jyn, she's not a character who's asking, 'Who am I and where have I come from?' She very much, we know that about her, we know where she's come from, and that fact is what propels the story and is the beginning of Jyn's journey to find out what her reason is and her course."

Jyn is accompanied in her journey by Cassian and by K-2SO, who is a reprogrammed imperial droid. Footage shows her giving a bag to the droid, who promptly drops it in the sand.

K-2SO actor Tudyk explained: "That's K-2. Go get the bags droid? 'No, I'd rather not, that's not my thing.' Because Cassian reprogrammed him, and he did a data wipe, and when he reprogrammed him he's not quite all there, he speaks his mind and says things that can be unsettling and just very honest.

"If you know any old people, he's just like that. He just says whatever he thinks."

Also at the Celebration was Ben Mendelsohn, who swept into the room in a white cape as new villain Director Krennic.

Giving clues about his character, Australian actor Mendelsohn said: "He is smarter, I think, than most of his predecessors, he's more inventive, he's perhaps a little sexier than some of them, perhaps not as sexy as some of the others."

Gwendoline Christie, who plays a Stormtrooper commander, responded: "Oh darling, darling, thanks."

Mads also provided a clue about Jyn's father, teasing: "He's a scientist and he at one point invented something so beautiful and so fantastic that it might change the universe. That's all I can say."
