Politicians, celebrities and people from around the world have expressed their shock at the truck attack in Nice that has left more than 70 people dead.

Chaos erupted on the streets of the Mediterranean city on Thursday night after the lorry ploughed into crowds who had gathered to mark the French national celebration of Bastille Day.

US president Barack Obama has condemned "in the strongest terms" what he said "appears to be a horrific terrorist attack".

In a statement tweeted by the White House, the president offered assistance to French officials to investigate and "bring those responsible to justice".

He said his "thoughts and prayers" were with the loved ones of those killed and wished those wounded a full recovery.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said he felt "deep emotion and infinite sadness" after the attack and other politicians also tweeted their reaction.

Within hours of the attack, public figures and social media users also took to social media to express their shock and solidarity with those affected.
