Video shows how not to have your car stolen
An informative video has shown just how easy it can be for thieves to take advantage of unsecured cars – and how to prevent it from happening to you.
Alarmingly, a car is stolen every 46 seconds in America, often due to preventable lapses in security.
The short video, released by America's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), details tips and tricks that will dissuade opportunist carjackers.
Some of the advice is as simple as parking in a well-lit area, and taking the keys with you as you walk away. However, it is these quick actions that can mean the difference between driving home or walking.
The age-old phrase 'out of sight, out of mind' bears truth when it comes to leaving a vehicle unattended. Expensive or desirable items left in plain view will attract a thief's attention and make your vehicle much more likely to be broken into or stolen.
Fitting an anti-theft device is also advised. However, if all of the above prevention methods fail, the NHTSA advises keeping calm and calling the cops!
