This video shows just how protective parents can be - whatever species they are.

The footage shows a snake on a dusty road holding a baby rat in its mouth - but not for long.

The mother rat appears in shot and immediately starts attacking the snake to try and get it to drop her baby.

Although you might think the snake has the upper hand here thanks to its size and length, but you'd be wrong.

The mother rat won't give up, nipping at the snake and chasing after it, latching onto the end of its body at one point as the snake writhes around.

Eventually the hard work pays off and the slithery predator lets go of the baby rat, dropping it onto the ground.

But even this isn't enough for the tenacious mother rat who immediately races after the snake, chasing it into the grass nearby.

It seems she wants to make sure the snake is gone once and for all as she hops over the blades of grass, shooing the snake into the undergrowth.

Only once the animal is well and truly out of sight does she return to check on her baby who is thankfully moving around on the ground where it was dropped.

She deftly picks up the baby in her mouth and scuttles away into the undergrowth herself!
