A sleeping girl was attacked and killed by a leopard after the animal dragged her away from the bed where she slept next to her parents in a village in India.

The 12-year-old girl's body was found in the backyard of the family home in Chheetar-ka-Badal, near Udaipur.

She was named as Ravina by local newspaper Udaipur Kurin following her death on Wednesday night.

The leopard reportedly climbed up a terrace and grabbed the girl by her neck.

According to the Daily Mail, she was taken at 12am but her parents did not realise she was missing until 4am.

When they found her body, they discovered teeth marks.

Villagers expressed their anger at the forest departments, which they say has failed to prevent leopard attacks.

A hunt for the leopard was launched.

It is the second leopard attack this month and residents say there are frequent sightings of the animals in the area.

In February, a male leopard that entered a school in India injured six people as they tried to catch it.

A scientist and forestry employee were amongst those mauled in a 10-hour long effort to remove the animal.

The eight-year-old leopard wandered into the Vibgyor International school in Bangalore and was filmed strolling around the corridors.

Conservation scientist Sanjay Gubbi and forest department employee Benny Maurius were called in to help capture it.
