Friends set up a Facebook appeal in a bid to find him. He reportedly ran into fields after rioting broke out outside the club.

According to the BBC, his body was found on Tuesday. A Foreign Office spokeswoman told the site: "We are working with local authorities following the death of a British national in Spain."

The Facebook page set up to find Sam shared a statement saying that it was Sam's friends who found his body in an irrigation canal in Viladecans.

"We are sorry we have not been able to tell anyone as the family had to be notified first. This morning while out looking for Sam myself, Elizabeth Morris, Walter Scott and David Pragg found Sam shortly after the police had arrived at the scene.

"We are devastated to announce he was dead at the scene. No one can quite believe what has happened and everyone is truly heartbroken.

"Thank you everyone for the help and support and prayers, we appreciate it so much.

"Sam was one of the kindest most genuine and loving people anyone could wish to know and to have him taken from us is truly heartbreaking."

The Daily Mail reports that Sam has been working as a performance analyst for the Qatar Stars League.

Friends described him as a "true gent" and a "beautiful young man".
