How To Handle Awkward Money Interactions

Money is a powerful thing, so powerful that it can lead to pretty awkward moments.

So, how do you handle when money makes things uncomfortable? Here are four tips on working through those kinds of moments!

1. One of your friends owes you money

A money loan between friends can turn into an elephant in the room if the borrower happens to 'forget'. For small amounts, remind your friend of the debt once or twice, if they still don't pay you back, let the outstanding debt go - but keep it in mind next time they ask for cash.

2. You can't afford to be a groomsman or bridesmaid

Bachelor parties end up averaging about £463 and a suit or dress can cost around £170. Speak up early if you suspect you might not be able to afford all the extra costs of the wedding. Don't wait until the last minute and force the couple to reschedule around you. Admitting your financial situation might feel vulnerable, but your friends are likely to support you.

3. One of your family members wants a freebie

Alison Green from Ask A Manager says: "It's pretty normal to do a small service for family, but when it becomes a significant project it's reasonable to be paid."

4. Your co-worker asks how much you earn

Only 25% of US workers said they were comfortable discussing how much they make with co-workers. While it's fair to dodge a nosy co-worker's question, in some cases being open can be a good thing.

Jodi R. R. Smith from Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, says: "The taboo against talking about salary does damage to those who are penalised based on stereotypes."
