Kelsey Grammer opens up about losing his faith

Kelsey Grammer has told how there was a time in his life when he lost his faith.

The Frasier star was "spiritual" while growing up but has faced several tragedies in his 61 years - his dad was shot and killed when he was in his early teens, his 18-year-old sister was murdered in 1975, his two half-bothers died in an accident in 1980 and in 2012 he and his wife Kayte lost a son in utero.

Kelsey told Radio Times: "I had a very spiritual youth. Then I had the challenges of a couple of really big tragedies."

Asked if his faith ever wavered, the Cheers actor said: "I probably lost it.

"There was a time when I abandoned the effort to find a reason to be alive.

"But things happened that said to me, 'Get up, Bambi.' I guess that's my raison d'être: 'Go on, get up Bambi'."

The US actor also battled substance abuse problems, but has been clean and sober since a stint in rehab several years ago.

And he insisted: "If I hadn't had adversity, I wouldn't be where I am."

This week's Radio Times is on sale on Tuesday, June 21.
