After days of torrential downpours and grey clouds, Britain is finally set to see some respite and the arrival of summer as weather forecasters predict sunshine and highs of 28C later this week.

Following a cool start to the week, temperatures will increase towards the weekend - a welcome change for festival-goers heading to Glastonbury from Wednesday.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson says: "Towards Thursday warm tropical Continental air will push up from Spain and France and with temperatures in the south reaching the mid to high 20Cs."

Mr Wilson warns that while Thursday is likely to be very warm, this change could bring thundery weather.

He adds that unlike last week, showers will be "fast-moving" and not persistent like the recent rain.

Meanwhile, bookies have slashed the odds as the mercury begins to soar.

Ladbrokes have cut the odds into 3/1 (from 10/1) that the thermometer heads north and reaches 25C or higher across the week.

The odds of rain falling every day at Glastonbury are 2/1, having been as short as 1/2 just a few days ago.

For today (Monday), which marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and the celestial transition point between the seasons, Simon Partridge at the Met Office told the Press Association: "It's a very wet start but it's not unusual to get a weather front coming across the UK at this time of year.

"It will brighten up through this afternoon and this evening, which should give us a few clear spells which should give a chance to do some moon-gazing."

A Strawberry Moon, a full moon which marks the start of the strawberry season, coincides with the Summer Solstice, an event which has not occurred for almost 50 years.
