Train derails at Paddington station

Rail passengers are facing an evening of disruption after a train derailed at a busy London station.

There were no passengers on board during the derailment at Paddington station, which Network Rail said was caused when the train ran a red signal.

The operator has apologised to customers for delays.

One passenger tweeted a picture of empty departure screens at Paddington, while others described their frustration at delays.

Tanbir tweeted: "stuck on the train into #londonpaddington going to miss an event I've paid for, really annoyed!"

Clive Nunn wrote: "Won't make it to the concert now. Gutted."

The disruption is expected to last until about 10.15pm.

Heathrow Express services have been suspended due to a loss of power at the station.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "An empty train travelled past a red signal outside Paddington station which activated an automatic derailment.

"No passengers were aboard and there are no injuries but some lines in to and out of Paddington are currently blocked.

"We have reopened some lines but passengers should go online to look at alternative travel options which are available to them. We are working to reopen all lines as quickly as possible."
