Terrifying moment spear-fishing teen is attacked by shark in Australia

A teenager spear fishing in Western Australia got an underwater shock when a reef shark lunged at him and bit his stomach.

Brad Vale, 19, was fishing with friends near Coral Bay on Wednesday when the angry shark attacked.

In a video posted on YouTube by Brad, the 2.5m shark can be seen circling before turning on him and biting the teenager, puncturing his wet suit.

Speaking to Perth Now, Brad said: "I dived down and just sort of sat down at the bottom and a shark came in on me.

"He got a bit close then did a big turn at me and charged so I gave him a poke. When I poked him he just turned back and without me noticing I looked down and he was already chewing on my gut.

"I got to the surface and was going to shoot it but I didn't even have time to do that. He sort of latched on to my stomach and I tried to hit it with my gun in my hand but he let go pretty quick."

In 2014, a fisherman got terrifyingly close to a great white shark off the coast of Queensland.

Trevor Ketchion was spear fishing off the Gold Coast with some friends when he spotted the shark not far from his group.

Rather than wait and see what happened next, he decided to take matters into his own hands and dived down and jabbed the shark in the back in an attempt to shoo it away.

While most people would swim in the opposite direction as fast as they possibly could, Trevor went straight towards it as he knew that a prod with the spear might make the shark think he was a predator.

The tactic appeared to work and the shark steadily swam away.
