Totnes Town Council has been forced to remove a large Union Jack flag from the town's civic hall after one resident complained about the noise it made when the wind blew.

Locals in Totnes, Devon are now angry that the flag had to be taken down and have flooded the council with emails and complaints.

The flag was raised to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland.

One local resident told the Torquay Herald Express: "Everyone I have spoken to is very angry about this.

"There are a lot of things happening this month with the Queen's birthday and the Euro's yet we, as a town, can't display a Union Jack at the civic centre for such a stupid reason as this.

"I have never heard anything so ridiculous. Too noisy? It is only a flag - how noisy can it be?"

ITV News reports that Cllr Marion Adams said in a council meeting: "There was a complaint that the flag was making too much noise. There are a lot of people who are very unhappy that it was taken down."

However, the council added that it was never a plan for the flag to fly at the civic hall permanently and the complaint reminded them that it was still up.

Councillor Ben Piper said: "It has never been customary to fly the Union Flag over the Civic Hall constantly."
