Brits aren't always known for being the best behaved guests when on holiday abroad, but do you know what some of these indiscretions could cost you?

With hoards of football fans flocking to France for the Euro 2016, it's likely that some will be breaking local laws, intentionally or not.

Voucherbox.co.uk and Go Euro have released a study of the cost disparities of misbehaving abroad. This looks in detail at the top 18 cities in Europe and reveals maximum and minimum penalty fines for: drinking in public, smoking in a public area, drunk and disorderly, travelling on public transport without a ticket and urinating in public.

Madridis the city to avoid if you want to indulge in a few drinks on the street. Those caught could face fines between £77 and £465 meanwhile Warsaw in Poland has the lowest payment of £20.

But there are plenty of cities around Europe where drinking in the street isn't prohibited so no need to worry about dodging fares in Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon and a number of other cities.

Smoking indoors in the UK became illegal in 2007 and a number of other European cities have the same regulations in place.

In Dublin you could be made to pay £2,324 if you're found puffing away while, at the other end of the scale, in Budapest, it's likely you will just get a warning.

Madrid features again on the list as the city most likely to hand out the heaviest fine for being caught drunk and disorderly but in Berlin, Stockholm and a number of other cities the same infraction won't necessarily cost you but you could face time in jail!

For those staying in the UK this summer it looks like the most important thing to remember is buying a ticket for transport.

If you're caught on public transport without a valid ticket in London you could face a fine of up to £1,000, the strictest punishment in Europe. In Berlin however you'd only be asked to cough up the equivalent of £16 if you don't have a ticket or pass on you.

Rome tops the list as the most expensive, with cumulative fines reaching over £8,000 – compared to just £54 in Reykjavik for smoking or urinating in public.

However the city does not recognise travelling without a ticket, being drunk and disorderly or drinking in public as public order offences worthy of a fine.

If you're curious about other European holiday destinations we haven't mentioned you can see the full list of fines and consequences on VoucherBox here.
