This is the cheapest holiday destination for Brits. It's Bangkok, Thailand, and, according to an online travel search engine, this is the place to go if you want your money to stretch furthest.

Kayak.co.uk carried out a survey, assessing all costs from airfares, hotel rates and a city tour to the cost of a cocktail for the top 10 summer destinations Brits will head to this summer, so they can see what they can get for their holiday budget.

The report says that Bangkok is the cheapest of the popular destinations to visit this summer for a 3 or 4-star hotel stay, with an average price of less than £1,000 for a week per person.

Kayak created an infographic for a summer holiday formula, which takes into account average costs for return flights, a one week stay in a hotel, a week's car hire, six meals, one city or museum tour, three cocktails on the beach or at the bar and even the price of a novelty souvenir.

Where to find the cheapest holiday
Eight of the ten most popular summer holiday destinations are either in Spain or the United States, yet the cheapest destination is where the pound goes the furthest: Bangkok, Thailand. The average cost for a week's holiday in the Thai capital is £838, per person. Looking closer to home, Spain offers some of the most popular and cheapest destinations. In Alicante, for example, the average cost for a week's stay is £880.

Cheapest flights
When it comes to return flights, Palma de Mallorca is the cheapest among the top summer destinations, with an average price of £273. Alicante is the destination second on the list for affordable return flights - averaging £289. As expected, destinations further away from the UK are more expensive - Toronto, Los Angeles and Orlando are the most expensive, with return flights averaging £653, £692 and £732, respectively. However, despite the considerable flying time compared to other destinations, Bangkok is only the fifth most expensive destination for flights.

Hotel prices
Looking at hotel rates for 3-star hotels, a week's stay at a 3-star hotel in Bangkok costs £234 on average - 79% less than the equivalent hotel stay in New York (£1123). Looking closer to the UK, a one week stay in a 3-star hotel in Palma de Mallorca is a more affordable option, with an average price of £547.

Travellers who want to stay in a 4-star hotel and get the best value should also head to Bangkok, where a one week stay costs on average £387. The next most affordable destination in the top ten is Alicante, where a one week stay in a 4-star hotel costs almost double, at an average rate of £656.

Faro, Portugal is another southern European destination that offers travellers affordable prices for a 4-star hotel this summer, with a one week stay costing £829, which is 41% cheaper than staying in a hotel of the same category in New York. North American countries complete the list with the most expensive prices for 4-star hotel stays. Brits who want to experience luxury in the USA should go to Orlando - a one week stay at a 4-star hotel costs on average £993. At the other end of the price scale, travellers heading to Los Angeles will find a 4-star hotel costs an average price of £1342 for a week.

Eating out
Eating at the restaurant will be easy on the wallet for Brits staying in Bangkok, with three days of lunch and dinner meals costing an average of £39. The lowest priced meals for listed Spanish destinations can be found in Malaga, where three days of lunch and dinner meals cost an average of £51. Unsurprisingly, New York City is revealed to be the destination with the highest meal costs - three days of lunch and dinner meals costs £135. If travellers fancy nice drinks, Spain and Portugal will be the best places to enjoy them.

For holidaymakers looking for cultural experiences, Spanish destinations are a great choice, with Alicante and Palma de Mallorca offering city tours for less than £10 per person on average. Orlando, Florida, also offers cheap tickets for a museum or city tour at £8, 73% less expensive than in New York, where competition is more aggressive and important.
