Summer is set to make a return this weekend as weather forecasters predict temperatures will reach 27C on Sunday.

It comes after Britain saw temperatures lower than Christmas Day this week and parts of the country were hit by rain and flooding.

Met Office forecaster Nicola Maxey told the Daily Star: "It is getting warmer and we could see a 10C difference in parts from Friday as temperatures rise.

"There will be some cloud around on Saturday morning but this will dissipate around the country apart from the east coasts."

She added: "In good sunshine we could see highs of 25C this weekend and lasting into the start of next week although there will be the chance of an isolated thundery burst with some heavy showers particularly in the south and the west."

Piers Corbyn, forecaster for WeatherAction, warned of extreme weather over the next fortnight.

Speaking to the Daily Express, he said: "We will see some very high temperatures across Britain which could even exceed 30C within the first two weeks of June."

Meanwhile, Ladbrokes has slashed the odds that this weekend's temperature soars well into the high 20s.

The bookies have seen a surge of bets on the temperature smashing through the 25C barrier (1/3) and it's now just a 2/1 shot that it hits 28C before the weekend's out, or there's 4/1 on offer for the mercury heading into the 30s.

Ladbrokes has also taken the scissors to the price this month enters the record books as the warmest ever, slashing it in half to 4/1 from 8/1.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told AOL Travel: "Summer's finally here and the odds suggest it's firmly going to start with a scorcher, leaving us with little option but to cut the odds."
